It's been commenting on a murder and an assault involving metro police officials in Durban.

Constable Sizwe Ngema has been charged with murder and theft for allegedly stabbing his pregnant girlfriend, Yolanda Khuzwayo, in their flat in the CBD.

He is due back in the city's magistrate's court next week.

In a separate incident, a sergeant based at Mpumalanga police station in Hammersdale is facing an assault charge.

He, in turn, has opened a counter-assault case against his girlfriend and accused her of damaging his vehicle.

The department's Mhlabunzima Memela has condemned the acts of violence.

"It’s very shocking that the law enforcement are the ones who are being accused of being involved in such cases.

“We are happy that both officers who are accused of being involved in the cases of gender-based violence, the metro police officer as well as the sergeant, were arrested."
