Underberg farm attack murder suspects in custody

Police have made a breakthrough following two separate farm attacks in the Underberg area that left two men dead earlier this month.

Officers say three suspects - aged between 19 and 29 - are now police custody in connection with the murders. 


Spokesperson Thulani Zwane says they each face two counts of murder, house robbery and car theft.

In the first murder - 46-year-old Gavin Carter was shot dead at his farm in Underberg at the beginning of this month.


Three days later, Trevor Rees was attacked at a farm near Himeville. 


The 76-year-old died later in hospital. Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane says the suspects were arrested near Bulwer.


"Three suspects were arrested on Friday in a joint operation by police as well as local farmers and security companies in the area. During the arrests, the police managed to recover some goods from house robberies that were reported in the area," he said.

KZN agricultural union KwaNalu's head of security, Koos Marais, say they welcome the development.


"We are delighted at the arrests and the good work done by the police. We're also delighted by the roles of the community and security companies have played. We're concerned by the number of attacks, especially in the Underburg area. But there are policemen on the ground work hard," he said.
