Uncollected refuse upsets Umlazi residents

Overflowing rubbish bins are causing a stink in Umlazi.

Some residents have told Newswatch their rubbish has not been collected for more than two weeks. They say refuse is strewn all across the streets, describing the problem as 'a real mess'.

Residents of the township's Q, W and BB sections, south of Durban claim eThekwini had not informed them about the refuse collectors' strike.

"There have been strikes by DSW and they have just been passing the garbage on the roads," said one resident.

"The situation is bad, we have put the rubbish on the side roads," said another.

The municipality's Mthunzi Gumede is urging residents to keep all their refuse bags on their properties.

He says striking workers are demanding permanent positions but the programme they fall under only provides temporary employment.

"Once you get into [the programme] you skill yourself and then you are able to apply for job opportunities that are available. While we hope they will return to work, there are interventions by Solid Waste to ensure refuse is collected from most of the homes," he said.
