uMvoti Municipality continues fight against land grabbing

uMvoti Municipality says its will continue demolishing houses that are illegally built on municipal land.

Four properties were torn down in Ebovini last week in the Midlands municipality.
Officials say the owners defied court orders.
Municipal Speaker Mfundo Masondo says they were simply enforcing a court interdict.

"The most recent order this year certain people living next to the municipal plot. We went to court because we saw people erecting structures unlawfully and the area became a crime zone."
Masondo says their research has found the area is not suitable for human settlement.
"What engineers did find is that in the next 15 years the water quality will be jeopardize because they are building next to a dam and some of the sewer is sliding into the dam and it supplies water to Greytown."
It's understood hundreds of locals have built their homes on municipal land while others have demarcated plots to start building.
