Umngeni Municipality hopes the issue of non-functional traffic lights during load shedding will be a thing of the past.

This is as the city has installed load-shedding-free traffic lights on six streets to ease the burden of traffic congestion caused by robots that do not work during outages.

These will be found at robots in Crossways, Quarry Centre, Harvard, Bell, Karkloof and Somme.

Municipal Mayor Chris Pappas says they invested about half a million rand to execute this project.

"The Umgeni Municipality has recently invested R500 000 in load shedding proofing our robots. To date, we have installed six backup sets of power to different robots throughout the municipality.

"Focusing on those robots that are high volume, especially during peak hour, we plan to incorporate another six in the medium term and will put this into our budget as a responsible municipality.

"Load shedding has brought devastation to the whole economy and as a municipality, a small municipality in KZN, we are doing what we can to ease the burden on the economy and the effects of load shedding."
