Umlazi residents worried about disease due to uncollected rubbish
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Angry uMlazi residents say the waste which remains uncollected in at least nine of its sections will pose a health risk to them as stray dogs have been ripping refuse bags open.
Refuse collection in the township stopped last week.
On Monday, eThekwini Municipality said in a statement it had had deployed extra collection trucks to deal with the backlog.
However residents from sections including Q, U, BB, Z, D and G say they have not seen any of these trucks.
Concerned resident, Nqabo Sithole lives in BB section and says the rubbish is piling up.
"No one has explained to us why the rubbish is not being collected. All we know is that on Tuesdays we're supposed to take out the rubbish but yesterday evening when I arrived home the rubbish was still there.
"In other areas it's looking very untidy now. The rubbish is all over the road and we're afraid that our kids will suffer as the air will be infected with all the rubbish that is not being collected," she said.
EThekwini Municipality has been unavailable for comment.
