Zandile Gumede's office says a group of angry locals stormed the uMlazi Parks Depot and Sizakala Office.

They're then believed to have intimidated staff and locked them out of the popular KwaMnyandu Mall.

It appears their grievance stems from the recent disruption to the township's refuse collection.

Rubbish sat on the streets for two weeks due to a pay dispute between the municipality and independent contractors, until eThekwini sent its own trucks to pick up the bags.

The Mayor's spokesperson, Mthunzi Gumede has appealed for calm and patience.

"There seems to be a series of activities that seems to sabotage the work of government in the south of Durban, the Umlazi areas, and the government is looking at ways to resolve this. There will be no tolerance for lawlessness," Gumede said.
