Umlazi residents complain of stench after delays in refuse collection
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
Residents in Umlazi are growing increasingly frustrated by ongoing disruptions to refuse collection in the area.
Rubbish bags sat on pavements there for two weeks before eThekwini sent teams to collect them.
Independent contractors downed tools again over unpaid contracts and conditions of employment.
This resident says they couldn't handle the stench. He had to mask his face when walking to and from his home.
"Next to my house, there's vacant land. People go there and throw all their dirt if the municipality is on strike - not picking up all the waste. So that affected us because there was a horrible smell coming from the vacant land. It happens almost every three months," the resident said.
