Umlazi man sentenced to 20 years for raping mother of his children
A 44-year-old man has begun serving a 20-year prison sentence for the brutal rape of the mother of his children.
The Umlazi Regional Court sentenced the man for the attack which took place in March of 2020 in the same area, south of Durban.
Authorities say the man was in a seven-year-long relationship with the woman with whom he shares two children.
It's understood that she ended the relationship after years of abuse two months prior to the attack.

The NPA's Natasha Kara says on the day of the incident the man went to the woman's house under the pretence of seeing their children, but an argument soon ensued.
"He then strangled and raped her until she lost consciousness, waking up the next morning. The woman had to undergo surgery due to the extent of the injuries she suffered from the rape.
"The man was sentenced to an effective 20 years imprisonment and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm. While the State argued for life imprisonment, the court deviated to a lesser sentence as the man appeared remorseful in court."
