Umlazi angry protesters block Mangosuthu Highway
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Metro Police and SAPS officers have been deployed to Umlazi south of Durban due to protest action.
Angry community members have blocked Mangosuthu Highway in V-Section and at Prince Mcwayizeni Drive.
Officers are urging motorists to avoid the area saying traffic is backed-up to Umlazi Comtech High School.
Meanwhile, medics responding to a call-out in Umlazi last night had to turn around when people began stoning their response vehicle.
About 2000 people blocked the Mangosuthu Highway in what's believed to have been a service delivery protest.
Netcare911's Chris Botha says medics had been en route to assist a critically ill resident.
Botha says the medical emergency was not related to the protest action.
He says the vehicle was severely damaged.
"The paramedics managed to turn around and get out of the area. One of the people told us that this had something to do with service delivery but at this stage we don't quite have any indication. The paramedics just got out there as fast as possible," he said.
