uMkhanyakude municipality faces possible dissolution
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The clock
is ticking for uMkhanyakude to avoid dissolution.

It became the eleventh district municipality to be placed under administration earlier this year, over its inability to hold council meetings and alleged mismanagement, which have affected service delivery.
Members of the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs' portfolio committee in KwaZulu-Natal descended on the struggling municipality following the collapse of another council meeting this week.
Chairperson Zinhle Cele says a final attempt will be made to hold a council sitting later this month.

"If they fail to pass the budget by the 30th of June, it means that by the 1st of July, they won't be able to pay salaries. I think we won't have any choice but to try and push them to section 139 (4) of the constitution, which means the disbandment of the municipality.”
She explains what the dissolution route entails.
"When the municipality is being dissolved, it means that it starts from scratch. We are going for elections, by-elections but all the councillors of the municipality get to be fired and we start from scratch.”
