It's understood that the man was seated in his vehicle outside a block of apartments along Meridian Drive on Thursday when suspects parked next to him and opened fire. The man sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body and was confirmed dead at the scene.

Police say the suspects then fled the scene in their getaway vehicle.

A case of murder has been opened for further investigation at Durban North SAPS. SANTACO's Sfiso Shangase says they understand that the man owned meter taxis and that tension is brewing in the Ilembe region.

"During our PEC meeting the Deputy Chairperson of Ilembe did mention that trouble was brewing in that region, especially from the side of oThongathi", he said.

"He's suggested we wait for law enforcement to carry out their investigations and come up with whatever they can" Shangase said.

"As the tax industry we convey our condolences to the believed family", he said.
