Umhlanga beaches reopened
Updated | By Shaun Ryan and Lethiwe Mdluli
It is good news for Umhlanga beachgoers ahead of the weekend.
The Umhlanga beaches were declared off-limits by authorities after a sewer pipe burst on Tuesday evening.
eThewkini Ward 35 councillor, Heinz de Boer says crews have now completed the repair work and mop up operations.
"Fortunately, the crews have been working really hard from the water and sanitation department. They have repaired the sewer that was damaged and that is operational now. They had to divert it at first and clean-up operations commenced. A lot of contaminated sand was removed. The promenade was disinfected," he said.
The Umhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct's Cara Reilly says teams will now focus on restoring the affected area.
"The [affected] area still has to be reinstated, that will be done but the sewage line has been fixed. It seems like we are back on track," she says.
