Umgungundlovu taxi drivers threaten to down tools over wages
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The South African National Taxi Council in KwaZulu-Natal is urging taxi operators to avoid exploiting drivers for the sake of profits.
This after drivers from the Umgungundlovu region had banded together, complaining about what they say are very low wages.
Some claim to be earning as little as R90 per day.
The group had also threatened to stop working, introducing a possible threat to operations.
Santaco KZN spokesperson Sifiso Shangase says they have managed to reach out to the associations the drivers belong to, urging them to find an immediate solution.

He says part of the bigger problem is that wages in their sector are not regulated.
"We are watching the outcomes of that mediation because eventually, mediation has got to be fair for everybody. Hence at a provincial level, there is nothing that we have done, but we have delegated the authority to the relevant and the closest peers of Santaco to be able to mediate.
"But if they encounter challenges with regards to how they are going to be able then to deliberate, we will then assist as the provincial office. But yes, we are monitoring the situation and we believe that the region will be able then to resolve this matter."
