The district municipality released a statement this morning warning businesses, ratepayers and communities of the need to introduce restrictions in an effort to alleviate the effects of the drought.

Officials say the drought is having a major impact on the KZN Midlands.

Mayor, Yusuf Bhamjee says the details around the restrictions will be made public in due course after all the technical assessments have been conducted.

Bhamjee says the water cuts are a last resort to secure and maintain future supplies for residents and businesses.

He says the aim of the programme is not to penalise members of the public.

A Joint Operating Committee - made up of experts from the Department of Water and Sanitation, Water Service Authorities and Disaster Management, among other entities - will meet regularly to monitor and evaluate the situation.

Bhamjee is urging people to respect restrictions, report leaks and save water.
