Umgeni Water bearing brunt of municipal non-payment
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Umgeni Water says it still has to contend with persistent late and non-payments by municipalities.
It says this becomes an added stumbling block in its ability to supply water.
Speaking at the sidelines of the entity's annual financial briefing in Durban this week Umgeni Water's CFO Thami Mkhwanazi said they have about nine municipalities as their customers, but only eThekwini is consistent with payments.
“There are issues of billing, when they've billed then, now how do they collect. Municipalities are struggling," said Mkhwanazi.
He said they are urging other municipalities to come forward so they can figure out how to assist them based on challenges they're facing.
"It's not only just leaks that we have to look at when we are assisting municipalities. We have to sit down and also assist them with the indigent programme which says if you are no working or if you are a pensioner, this is the amount kilolitres you supposed to get per day."
