Umdoni workers says municipality facing collapse
Updated | By Mamelisa Ngcongo
Workers at Umdoni Municipality in southern KwaZulu-Natal say urgent intervention is needed to save it from collapse.
The employees, who belong to South African Municipal Workers Union and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union, staged a picket on Monday.
They've also met with municipal manager Thabisile Ndlela.
SAMWU's Xolani Shinga says the workers have tabled a list of 27 demands, which include questions about the qualifications of senior managers.
"The roads department has collapsed, there is no tools of trade, no trucks and tractors because they put these consultants to run the department. It is outsourced completely. Workers have said enough is enough, they do away with consultants and procure the tools of trade in the municipality."

Shinga says the municipality is expected to table its response next week.
"The deputy mayor received this partition and they signed the partition. They made a commitment that on Monday they will come back with positive responses. Workers are at work, there was no strike. It was a meeting that was arranged by the municipal manager, employees and the workers went back to work."
