Umbilo river oil spill cleanup completed
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The cleanup operation at the Umbilo River following a massive crude oil spill last month is finally over.
The confirmation comes from Transnet Pipeline who says the contamination in the Durban Harbour and Umbilo river is now contained.
It was suspected that the pipeline running through the Durban South river was tampered with by fuel thieves causing a massive leak of over 60 000 litres of crude oil into the water.
In a statement Transnet says the clean-up was a joint operation between itself, Transnet National Ports Authority, Department of Environmental Affairs along with the Department of Water and Sanitation to name a few.
Since the start of the operation Transnet says about eight skips of plastic and rubble have been removed along the riverbank and mangroves. As a precautionary measure two booms have been placed at the storm water outlet and one at the harbour mouth.
A criminal case has been opened following the incident, however, there have been no arrests yet.
