UKZN students strike over allowances in PMB

The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Pietermaritzburg campus has been struck by a wave on student unrest.

The Student Representative Council’s Phiwayankosi Mungwe says more than 1,000 students have not received their allowances.
“They arrived on January 22 and up until today, they haven’t received any money for food or rent,” he said.
Mungwe said the students had mobilised themselves and encouraged others to join their protest.
“They don’t want to go to lectures until the issue is resolved,” he said.
He said UKZN management had responded with haste and that the students were encouraged by this.
Varsity spokesperson Normah Zondo confirmed that a group led by the SRC were disrupting lectures on the campus.
“The students are citing matters ranging from accommodation issues, academic exclusions, exam dates and funding. Executive management has been engaging with the student leadership in an effort to resolve matters and will continue to do so," she said.
