UKZN students get their feet wet in World Oceans Day initiative
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen & Lethiwe Mdluli
World Oceans Day is being celebrated by students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
They have been conducting tests - including testing pH levels of the ocean - at Trawlers Wharf in Durban today.
They are also taking part in the launch of a new initiative to conserve marine life.
The Department of Life Sciences has partnered up with universities from around the world in order to bring awareness to people about the effects of polluted ecosystems.
PhD student at UKZN, Refilwe Mofokeng, explains the importance of looking after the oceans.
"Acidification is actually a global problem. We all know that there is diversity in the ocean and with the PH levels dropping, it is going to affect the biodiversity and organisms that are living in the ocean. It is not only them, we are also dependant on the ocean, we eat fish and are part of the ecosystem. 70% of the world is the oceans," she said.
