The sobbing and bleeding first year student spoke to reporters moments after he had been shot in the ear with a rubber bullet, on Thursday.

He said he had been earlier assaulted by private security personnel after leaving his residence to get fresh air - after the building was tear-gassed.

He has since been provided with a video of the incident, in which he is heard screaming as he is manhandled whilst being pinned against a railing.

The student, from Pietermaritzburg, says a group of protesting students ran past him, and that security guards - who were hot on their heels - assumed he was one of them.

"One guard kept on hitting me with his gun. I then tried to grab the gun but a second guard appeared to be aiming for my head so I ducked and I was shot in the ear," he said.

"If I did try to cause any harm or try to cause any security personnel then they would have taken me to jail but they did not because they knew I was not part of the protest," Bailey said.

This video showing the attack on the student by security personell, was taken by another student. It has since gone viral on social media site Facebook.
