UKZN student nabbed near burnt victim's body
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Police say a UKZN student nabbed on suspicion of murdering a fellow student has been arrested close to where the victim’s burnt remains were discovered.
The 25-year-old suspect was taken into custody after security officers on Westville campus received a report of smoke billowing from a bush. The police’s Jay Naicker says that’s where they found the suspect yesterday.
"They immediately apprehended the suspect and called police. Upon further investigation the body of the victim was found in the bushes and had been set alight", he said.
It is understood the victim, Samkelo Zondi, a fourth year Bcom student, was reported missing on Thursday.
"There had been many attempts by family, friends, fellow students and Westville police to locate the deceased and we suspect this then spooked the suspect into doing what he did", Naicker said.
