UKZN prepares for SRC elections today

Candidates running to be elected in the SRC elections include some of the UKZN Pietermaritzburg campus students who were released on bail last week.

The elections for a new student body kick off today.

These students had been initially denied bail when seven of their co-accused were released in October.

They are required to adhere to bail conditions - some of which state that they're not allowed on campus unless they're writing tests or exams.

Despite this, SRC's Nhlakanipho Ndlovu says campaigning has gone well in PMB.

"It's SASCO that is aligned with the ANC and then the South African Youth Climate Change Coalition has this year taken a stance to say they want to contest in the election. It's a combination of student leaders who have united behind that particular banner," he said.

Howard College elections will also see newcomers, the Black First Land First Student Movement taking part.

Mandla Mbuyazi says they want to change student mentality, saying the SRC is the only legitimate voice that can speak for them.

"We are going to use the state of elections to mobilise the students but also at the same time, ensuring that their level of consciousness grows. If it's SRC elections, you get a platform to go to residences, you have election debates and the reception from students has been very positive," he said.
