UKZN PhD student heads beach clean-up initiative
Updated | By Portia Cele
A UKZN marine biology student is leading a clean up operation at the Durban harbour today.
Tuesday's severe weather conditions have seen large quantities of waste products - including plastic and polystyrene among other things - washed into the harbour and spread across the city's beaches.
PhD candidate, Refiloe Mofokeng says with her non-profit organisation, today's initiative hopes to bring local communities closer following the disruptive storm.
"In as much as it's part of data collection, it's also a way to boost the morale of the society. To say, even if we have been affected by the storm - we are doing something about it and engaging communities," she says.

The NPO holds monthly clean-ups and actively works to tackle pollution in the city. It also engages with various authorities on better ways to manage waste.
Last month, 700 kilograms of litter was collected. Mofokeng says Durban residents are welcome to join them.
"We really need all the help we can get. We're thankful to all businesses and retail companies that said they'll be there providing water and gloves. As an activist and a scientist, we are doing something about this issue," she says.
