UKZN medical students campaign for R1m to ease historical debt
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The University of KwaZulu-Natal's medical students have taken it upon themselves to help their peers - who face financial exclusions.
They have launched a campaign to raise at least R1 million for 118 students by Valentine's Day.
The money will be used to clear their varsity fees, racked up year after year. This will enable them to register for the new academic year.
The students held a peaceful protest outside the medical school in Durban yesterday.

Xolisa Njapha is with the 'IMadeADoctor' campaign. She says they can't stand-by and watch their friends go back home.
"We are trying to reach out to those or trying to help our brothers and sisters because people even in six years time during their final years and they have these historical debts even others they have piece jobs."
"Others do have NSFAS but they have to go back home and help their parents. Making a difference in this people's lives, seeing doctors growing in disadvantaged communities would be really great knowing that I helped out," she says.
