UKZN hopeful lectures will resume tomorrow

UKZN is hopeful lectures will resume at its Edgewood campus in Pinetown tomorrow.
Management and student leaders met following protest action there on Friday. Students are unhappy with an off-campus residence at the Highway Commando Association which also houses soldiers.
Students burnt tyres and blocked the entrance to the campus forcing management to suspend classes. Some of the issues raised by students include a lack of WiFi and toilet and kitchen facilities that are a distance from their rooms.
The varsity's Nomah Zondo says protests were over new issues raised with management.
"For students staying at off-campus residence, if there are issues then those issues can be brought to management. We have a number of students staying at various accommodations across the city. We are aware of some issues brought to us and we have taken them up with the relevant landlords," she said.
Zondo says the varsity has no choice but to accommodate some students at off-campus, private residences.
"We receive more than 20 000 applications for accommodation across our campuses. Of that amount we can only accommodate 7 000, so this means about 11 000 students are accommodated in private residences," Zondo said
