UKZN doesn't condone the assault of students: spokesperson
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Management at UKZN has condemned all forms of assault towards protesting and non-protesting students.
This comes as a first-year student was hurt during clashes involving police, private security and students on the Westville campus last week.
Speaking to reporters with a bloodied ear after being, the student who was struck by a rubber bullet, said he was not involved in the protests when he was injured.
He claims he was also assaulted by private security guards shortly after leaving his res room after the building had apparently been tear gassed.
In the video footage, filmed soon after the incident, he can be heard crying while pinned against the railing of a fire escape. His parents are considering taking legal action.

UKZN's Lesiba Seshoka is urging students who have been assaulted by private security to report incidents to management.
It's simply not acceptable. It's not something we can condone. It doesn't matter what the person has done. We are living in a country where the law prohibits anybody behaving in an awkward way," he said.
