In a statement issued by management today, UKZN said the 8% increase will apply to tuition and accommodation in residences.
The university says only 30% of their students will be affected by the fee hike.
The rest - who are students studying with state funding, and those whose annual household incomes do not exceed R600 000 - will be exempt from the increase, as it will be covered by the Department of Higher Education, and NSFAS.

UKZN says while it recognizes the financial difficulties of some students, it also needs to ensure the long-term sustainability of the institution.
The announcement comes after Wits University said on Monday that fees at the institution will be going up by 8% in 2017.
