Ugu water shortage: SAMWU says members not on strike
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
Municipal workers' union, SAMWU says while there are labour issues it wants addressed, workers on the south coast are not on strike - contrary to claims they have downed tools illegally.
Water supply to parts of Ugu has been cut leading to municipal bosses and some residents suspecting sabotage by municipal workers.
SAMWU's Mthandeni Ngcobo says their members have not planned protest action.
"We are at work except that we have been barred from entering the municipal premises. We have never gone on any strike - we want to be fully active," he said.
Authorities say they have discovered that some valves have been tampered with. But Ngcobo says it was not them.
"If there is no water - it will be contractors that are tampering with the infrastructure, not us. The municipal workers are not tampering with any kind of infrastructure. The municipality has deployed contractors to do operations on site and we do not know what is happening.
"If there's anybody tampering with infrastructure - it would be contractors deployed by the municipality," he said.
