Ugu water crisis worsens
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Ugu District Municipality says having the region declared a disaster zone will help prioritise long-term interventions aimed at tackling ongoing water shortages.

The municipality’s France Zama says officials are doing all they can to mitigate the impact of the latest water issues affecting the Harding area. He says they are in the process of approaching provincial government to have the Harding area, under Ugu, declared a disaster zone due to the immense water shortage being experienced.
"Our municipal council has resolved so we are following all the due processes", he said.
"We have already submitted a reported to the provincial Department of Cooperative Governance for consideration. Thereafter the document will be put forward before cabinet for approval", Zama said.
Some reservoirs are sitting at below 10% capacity –and continue to diminish. He says some restrictions have been implemented while water tankers are also being dispatched to affected areas.
Several challenges including an illegal strike, damaged infrastructure and water shortages have disrupted supply to parts of Ugu recently.
