It's led to effluent flowing into the Nkongweni River and has forced the closure of some beaches to bathing and recreational activities.

Local businessman, Brandon Lehmann, runs The Grove Restaurant And Beach Bar, which has also had to close its doors.

"There has been damage to the pump station as well as a lot of the lines on our area.

"Currently, we are going through a period where there is a massive break, there is no water in Margate, Ramsgate the pressure is low due to line break. There was a massive surge issue in Lucien which is on the beach adjacent to Margate - they had a massive line break there as well."

One of the pipelines that got washed away is the one that runs to and from Margate's 3A pump station.

Ugu municipal spokesperson France Zama says it will take a bit of time to fix.

"Our sewer lines - the ones which carry the sewer from all the areas around Margate were damaged. The rehabilitation of the sewer substation is not something that will be done overnight. We have already started in terms of costing. Based on the estimates we currently have its going to cost use more than R120 million."
