"What causes the challenges is that the whole district, you'll find that we had the plans as a district municipality on issues of water but the plans that we have made some of them they are not relevant right now because of drought," says Ugu's Sizwe Ngcobo.

Six KwaZulu-Natal mayors belonging to the ANC were grilled about service delivery issues and other challenges plaguing their municipalities in Durban on Monday.

eThekwini Mayor Mxolosi Kaunda and Umsunduzi's Mzimkhulu Thebolla were among those in the hot seat.

Ngcobo said the district's been hit by serious water issues.

Some residents have had to make do without the precious resource for weeks.

"And what we are doing with that, working with the province, the national and Umgeni water board, if you go along the freeway you would see on the right-hand side that there are big pipes that are being put there.

"We are trying to deal with that issue because when we had a plan where there were projects, we thought that that river is going to give us water so that we can make sure that our communities get water.

"But now they don't get water because I can walk in that river during the day and the night."
