UCT temporarily suspends lectures, closes library in unrest

The University of Cape Town has temporarily suspended classes and closed study areas due to an ongoing protest. 

A statement published by the university states this is to ensure more security measures are implemented on the campus.

The university closed its libraries and 24/7 study areas earlier today.

The protesting students have vowed to shut down the university after UCT suspended, interdicted and expelled some students involved in protests against fee increases. Yesterday, they had given the university 48 hours to response.

Meanwhile, the university made headlines last year - following a series of student protests over the statue of Cecil John Rhodes. 

The students were calling for its removal from the university's upper campus, saying its a reminder of the country's colonial past.
