Typhoon Hato: Durban woman speaks of terrifying moments

A Pinetown woman - who has been caught up in Typhoon Hato - has spoken exclusively to Newswatch about the powerful storm that blasted through parts of Hong Kong and southern China this week.

Typhoon Hato
Shardale Pumasir

Shardale Pumasir is an English teacher at a primary school in Macau, on the south coast of China.

In her area, at least nine people were killed.

"It's really terrifying. It was quite scary to look outside and see things flying around. I saw a roof awning just come out," she says.

"From the ground to the waist up - the streets were flooded. Our electricity and water stopped. The water was contaminated and a lot of people had died," she says.

Twenty-eight-year-old Pumasir says they're now trying to pick up the pieces.

"Now it's just about cleaning up the damage. It's definitely going to take us a few days. We are all rallying together and helping each other," she says.

Authorities say a further eight people are known to have died in parts of southwestern China.
