The Department says the scuffle between the girls was filmed at Matholo High School in Zululand.

In the clip, a matric pupil is seen kicking and punching a Grade 11 learner.

"We have suspended two learners involved in a case of bullying in Zululand pending disciplinary process.

"Professional therapy will be offered to the victim and other learners. Aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated in our system," says the department's Kwazi Mthethwa.

Mthethwa has appealed to people to please refrain from sharing the video of the assault.

Meanwhile, the Congress of SA Students believes school bullying is a result of the violence children are exposed to.

Spokesperson Zithulele Ndlela says corporal punishment is continuing at some schools:

"Teachers are still using corporal punishment as a manner of disciplining learners and it creates a wrong perception to say, for me as a teacher to be respected, you need to be violent on learners.

"Even at home where parents believe that corporal punishment is the only way of disciplining their child, it creates a wrong perception and learners take those things because they are young. No one is born a bully."
