Two Verulam women accused of swindling R41m
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
Two Verulam women accused of swindling a local clothing manufacturer out of R41-million have been released on bail.
Varusha Ramdeen, who’s employed by the company, and family friend Zarina Amod were arrested on charges of fraud and theft last week.
It is alleged that over the last five years, Ramdeen facilitated the transfer of unauthorised payments from the company’s account into Amod’s.
The pair appeared in the Verulam Magistrate's Court, north of Durban today.
Ramdeen and Amod’s bail application went unopposed by the State.
They have both indicated that they will plead not guilty, but the court heard the two are not flight risks and that if released on bail, they would not endanger the public.
Bail's been set at R40,000 for Ramdeen and R60,000 for Amod.
The State avers Amod received a more substantial benefit from the crime.
Their arrest followed an investigation by Coast to Coast Investigations and the South African Police Service.
