Two bodyguards have died in a shooting at the municipal offices in Richards Bay.
The incident happened on Thursday morning.
"We heard multiple gunshots. We discovered that the two bodyguards that are employed here who were [at] loggerheads apparently had a conflict and one attacked the other and shot them multiple times," says Umhlathuze spokesperson Bongani Gina.
Gina says the bodyguard who fired the shots tried to leave the building.
“Another bodyguard who witnessed what happened shot the one who was trying to runaway."
The protectors were part of the mayor and city manager's security detail.

"We thought it was a normal work conflict. The mayor and city manager were trying intervene and asked them have a meeting. In fact, today [Thursday] they were going to have a meeting with the deputy city manager of community services who is also responsible for security, to resolve their differences. Unfortunately, this happened."
Gina says they are all shocked.
"The mayor is meeting the two families right now. The Speaker, the City Manager and councillors are also meeting with the families. We would like to send our condolences to them. We believe this conflict would have been better resolved in a more amicable way than the route that has been taken."
Police are still at the scene and will investigate the circumstances leading to the shooting.
