Members of the Hawks cornered the men in Montrose in Pietermaritzburg yesterday after receiving information about the suspects. They are believed to have been involved in house robberies and car theft. Hawks provincial spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo says an inquest docket has been opened.

"We have arrested 2 suspects for attempted murder, attempted theft of motor vehicles as well as for possession of unlicensed firearms. During the operation met up with the suspects while one of the suspects was busy attempting to enter one of the vehicles in the area. The suspect shot at the police and the police returned fire," he said.

Officers recovered the suspects' car, twelve car computer boxes, a crowbar, a car jamming device and a police radio. They also seized three 9mm pistols and live rounds of ammunition.

In a separate incident the girlfriend of a Bergville man whose decomposed body was found in Wembezi is due to appear in court this week after she was arrested on suspicion of murder. 47 year-old Raymond Mabizela was reported missing last month after he was apparently lured to Wembezi by his 28-year-old girlfriend.

It is alleged the woman arranged with another man to kidnap Mabizela while in Wembezi. His body was later found wrapped in a carpet. Police spokesperson Major Shooz Magudulela says she will appear in court soon.

"The suspect is expected to appear in court on the 3rd of May following the death of 47-year-old Raymond Mabizela whose body was found on the 11th of March. Investigations are still underway," he said.
