A 28-year-old suspect who was injured in a shootout that left two other suspected criminals dead is recovering in a Durban hospital under police guard.
Police say officers from the Phoenix Trio Crime Prevention Unit had been patrolling the area on Wednesday night when they spotted a car with three occupants on Northern Drive.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Thembeka Mbele says they tried to pull the vehicle over, but the driver failed to stop.
She says the officers pursued the car.
"When the police approached the suspects that were in a vehicle, they were met by a hail of bullets. One of the police officers was shot on the leg.
"The injured police officer is in a stable condition in hospital. Two firearms were seized by police for further investigation. The suspects’ vehicle was impounded for further investigation.
"Police are investigating charges of attempted murder and inquest. More charges will be added at a later stage."
