The suspected hijackers where arrested after a shootout with police in Inanda yesterday - which saw another two suspects shot dead.

They were chased by police after they were spotted in a vehicle thought to have been hijacked in Inanda - north of Durban last month.

The men, aged 25 - 35, are facing hijacking charges and charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele says they allegedly opened fire on police and crashed the vehicle in Verulam.

"When the police noticed the Toyota Quantum they tried to stop the drivers of the vehicle and then the shooting took place. Two suspects where fatally wounded and two were arrested. One shotgun was recovered," she said.

The unlicensed handgun will be taken for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the province.
