The department's spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says they are still collating information on the affected schools.

""The damaged vandalised looted schools, they are adding up to the burden in terms of ficus that is already depleted which is going to be a problem when we reopen schools."

Mahlambi says the department's budget has been cut by R6.2 billion and there won't be enough money to start rebuilding.
"This has happened throughout the province, since the start of the unrest on a daily basis we are getting a lot of information in the form of pictures school burning, school being vandalised. We are very much disappointed as the Department of Education."
