Two SA cities on 'cheap dagga' list

A new study has listed the cheapest and most expensive cities to buy cannabis in.

Cannabis, popularly known as 'dagga', remains a contentious issue among South Africans.

Its recreational use is still the subject of litigation while it's medical use has become an important discussion among lawmakers, after one admitted to using it.

While it is still illegal to sit back and enjoy a joint, South Africans are using it - that is if police figures and arrests are anything to go by.

Now a new study has managed to determine the average cost of cannabis per gram, with Cape Town and Johannesburg ranking among the cheapest destinations.

In Cape Town, one gram of dagga will set you back R69,39 on average.

However, Jo'burgers have it even cheaper with a gram costing around R47,71.

But researchers at Seedo, who compiled the 2018 Cannabis Price Index, also determined the tax potential, if it is taxed at the same level as cigarettes.

In that case, the South African Revenue Service will be even more delighted with potential new legalisation than those consuming it.

Johannesburg could bring in over R44,7 million in tax revenue, followed by Cape Town at just over R29.3 million.

This reality might not be too far away.

The Western Cape High Court ordered parliament to amend legislation to allow for the use of cannabis in your private home.

While the ruling is being challenged, cannabis activists have asked the Constitutional Court to confirm the high court's ruling.
