Two men sentenced for murder of Ekuvukeni resident

A northern KwaZulu-Natal man has begun serving a life sentence for his role in the murder of an Ekuvukeni resident during a home invasion.

The Ezakheni Regional Court sentenced 25-year-old Bongani Buthelezi to an additional 15-years in prison for the armed robbery, nearly three years ago. 


His 22-year-old accomplice's grandmother went to the police after Simphiwe Mtshali shared information about the attack with her. 


KZN police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says he took them to the home of the victim, Mphumzeni Mbongwa.

"The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. During the police investigation, it was established that the victim was also robbed of several appliances as well as a vehicle. 


"The vehicle was later found set alight at Somsuku area in Ekuvukeni. The stolen property was recovered at Buthelezi's house." 


Mtshali was handed a 22-year sentence for murder and 12 years for robbery.
