On the night of the attack, Hadaro was woken by the sound of men tearing the tin roof from his tuckshop and banging at his front door.

He was robbed and threatened and when, in a desperate bid to escape, he ran out into the street in his boxer shorts, his attackers gave chase and eventually stabbed him to death.

A neighbour who tried to intervene, was asked if she was willing to die for a foreigner.

In her judgment, Masipa says we live in fear of people like Hlangani and Dimba and that the courts must deal with their offences harshly.

She agreed with State advocate Krishen Shah, who prosecuted the men, that they have shown no remorse.

She said society’s interests are best served by their being locked away.
