The quality assurance body has been commenting on the arrests of two KwaZulu-Natal women recently.

They submitted fraudulent certificates during registrations at a local university.

The 20 and 27-year-olds are due back in court at the end of next month.

"Producing or faking a matric certificate is actually regarded as a criminal offence. People who are found to be guilty of that offence can actually be in incarcerated for a period of up to 5 years," says Umalusi spokesperson Lucky Ditaunyane.

He says police need to track down the source of these illegal certificates.

"On an annual basis, we have observed trends in the increase of people who produce fraudulent certificates, mainly matric certificates, which is a very important qualification in our country."
