According to police, the officer - who was with Blue Security - headed to his former girlfriend's block of flats at Brigbury Place on Friday night.

Police say he killed the woman and also wounded her 51-year-old mother and a security guard at the complex.

The man then shot himself, and was later declared dead on scene.

Spokesperson for Blue Security, Andreas Mathios says the officer abandoned his post in Chatsworth before going on the shooting spree.

"After failing to report via his radio, we sent out an SAPS vehicle to find out exactly what the circumstances were as to why he was not reporting. We had assumed that he had possibly been ambushed or hijacked in a crime-related situation. Unbeknown to us, he had made his way across the city to the crime. We were informed by the 10111 centre, that a shooting had occurred invovling a Blue Security officer. At this stage, we cannot confirm the circumstances around the shooting," he says.
