Two patients have died in a fire at a COVID-19 ward at the FH Odendaal hospital in Limpopo.
The blaze gutted parts of the Modimolle hospital on Monday morning.
Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba says nurses managed to extinguish the fire.
“Nurses at the hospital managed to extinguish the fire and rescue the patients inside the ward. Unfortunately, the two had already demised.”

The department has since sent a team of fire experts and forensic pathology to the hospital.
"When people are brought to the hospital, we hope that they will be cared for and heal and be reunited with their families,” says Ramathuba.
“For them to pass on in this tragic manner is really heart-wrenching. Our sincere and deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.”
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
