Two killed in alleged blue light crash
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Two people have been killed in an alleged ‘blue light crash’ on the N2 between Zinkwazi and KwaDukuza on the north coast.
The escort vehicle, a double cab bakkie, used by protectors assigned to KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu collided head-on with a car last night. One of the vehicles veered across the centre median into oncoming traffic.
IPSS Medical Rescue says 2 people who had been travelling in the car were killed on scene while 3 others were hurt – 1 critically. Medics say the injured had to be treated on scene with advanced life support before being rushed to hospital for further medical care. The occupants of the escort vehicle escaped with only minor injuries.
The Office of the Premier confirmed that a back-up vehicle used by Mchunu’s security detail was involved in the crash.
However, spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says Mchunu was at his home at the time of the fatal accident - following a meeting organised by the Premier’s Co-ordinating Forum in Durban.
The exact cause of the crash is unknown and is being investigated by police.
