It is understood the bus was travelling from Warden to Harrismith when it burst into flames while still in motion.

The bus then veered across the road before coming to a rest on an embankment.

Netcare 911's Chris Botha says 23 others were hurt.

"We found that two people had sustained critical injuries. There was another four that had sustained serious injuries and 17 that escaped with relatively minor injuries.

"There were two children missing. After the fire department went through the wreckage of the bus, they found that the missing children were in fact twins. Two little girls aged three had died due to the severe injuries that they had sustained," he said.

In KwaZulu-Natal, two construction workers have been killed in an accident in the Umkhanyakude District.

KZN EMS's Robert McKenzie says a truck is believed to have crashed into three other vehicles on the R618 near Hluhluwe Game Reserve.

"Paramedics from KZN EMS treated at least five other patients at the scene who had all sustained serious injuries.

"The exact cause of the crash is not known at this stage and it will be investigated by the police," he said.
