Twin doctors thrive in the face of adversity
Updated | By Portia Cele
Twin brothers from Khayelitsha, who graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees have begun making their own contributions towards another disadvantaged community.
Twenty-three-year-old Wandile and Wanele Ganya graduated from Stellenbosch University earlier this month alongside two other sets of twins with degrees in medicine.
The brothers are based at the Ngwelezana Hospital in Empangeni, in KZN.
Having seen a need for an improved healthcare system in their own hometown, this steered the pair towards choosing a career in Medicine.
While another reason is, Wandile says, the real encounter with health having to care for his brother who contracted an illness in matric.
He says it's crucial to recognise talents of youngsters who are from similar backgrounds.
"Within each and everyone of us there is value to be bestowed in the world. A lot of talented and passionate people are found within these communities.
"It's very, very important for people to tap into that uncharted land. People from these environments - like myself - have a different flavour to add to the greater intellectual discourse in the world," he said.
The medical practitioners both received the Rector’s Award for Succeeding Against the Odds which funded their studies.
